Review: 2018 Ford Explorer

The 2018 Ford Explorer is a family-based SUV that seats up to seven passengers. The Explorer offers a comfortable cabin on the interior combined with a stylish and technology packed exterior. Ford provides the Explorer in five different trim levels to suit the needs of every family.

The Ford Explorer is an enjoyable family vehicle offering three engines for drivers to choose from.  All engine options are paired up with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The most common of the three engine options is a 3.5-liter V-6 powertrain making 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque.

There second of the three excellent engine options is for a 3.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that turns in 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The much lower torque peak allows this engine to tow up to 3,000 pounds.

The highest output engine option paired up with the Explorers All-Wheel drive option. This powerful powertrain is a twin-turbo 3.5 liter V6 churning out 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Features and Technology

The Ford Explorer has five options when choosing a trim:  Base, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. Each level offered something different, and there is a trim for every driver.

The Base trim comes with 18-inch wheels, rearview camera, and Sync voice commands. This option allows drivers to choose the FWD or AWD model.

Going up a couple of rungs on the ladder to the Limited will add quite a few features to your Explorer. The Limited trim adds leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, premium audio, and power-folding third-row seats. The Limited trim comes standard with 3.3 LITER turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but the 3.5 liter V6 is available in this trim as well.

The highest trim level the Ford Explorer offers is the Platinum model. The Platinum package gives drivers a panoramic sunroof, an automated parking system, premium leather upholstery, and a premium audio system. This is the best option for drivers looking to have all the Explorer has to offer.

A new feature available for 2018 is a 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot inside your Explorer. This is perfect for long road trips, keeping the passengers entertained and connected the whole drive.

Ford always has safety in mind, and the 2018 Ford Explorer does not disappoint. The seven-passenger SUV earned a Five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard safety features on almost every model include a rearview camera and forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking. Blind spot monitors are also available additions for safety.
